Living room with American bison upholstered pieces. The house was simple; the setting was Texas hill country, rolling for miles and miles. The theme was the American Bison – over the fireplace and as upholstered pieces throughout the home. Mike Porter, retired commercial contractor, designed and built his retirement minimalist dream home. He built it using industrial utilities and services. Mike admits his habits were formed in the Army: neat, precise, everything in its place. Without the clutter of the usual American home his was bare-bones, functional, and the beauty of his furnishings shone. His choice of furniture reflects the old West. American bison leather pieces incorporated boot stitching inspired by cowboy boots and colored braiding coming from the rein-making tradition. The guest bedroom features a queen-size bed with appliquéd headboard in saddle bison leather. The master bed is flanked by laced bison robe carpets. The naked bison leather is characterized by a soft hand, great flexibility and strength, and thickness and durability that works well with a rugged yet refined lifestyle. This is the quintessential American home: built by its owner and decorated with furnishings made in America. Leather is from American bison on American ranches. Design and decoration come from The Buffalo Collection. In a global economy we can be proud to be “ethnic American”, reflecting a tradition of beautiful craftsmanship.
