“Cactus Flower” takes her name from the delicate torch cactus blossom adorning her hair. The cactus flower has sometimes been used as the Indian symbol for love and romance. She fondles her necklace which is of Plains Indian design. Made of beads and dentallium shells, which are a symbol of wealth and power, it would have been a highly-coveted prize of warfare and a meaningful gift from her warrior suitor.
As this young Apache maiden awaits the warrior’s return, perhaps she envisions the time when they will once again be together.
